| About Us Lakeshore Gymnastics, Inc. 1986 to Today... A Brief History Lakeshore was formally incorporated on July 18, 1986 with the purchase of the Skateland Arena in Chesterton. After purchasing the facility, the owners had to initiate a major renovation project. The building sat empty for nearly 18 months, the result of a fire. Work crews, composed of mothers, fathers and gymnasts, 75 individuals in all, took turns working 16 hours a day, seven days a week for 8 weeks to make Lakeshore ready for her first class on September 26, 1986. In December of 2006, Lakeshore was purchased by Rob & Shelly Surber of Chesterton. Rob, a long time coach and instructor at both Lakeshore and the High School levels and Shelly a Family Nurse Practitioner bringing new and exciting ideas and values to an already bustling club. Since the 1986 opening, over 30,000 area boys and girls, ages two and over have walked through the doors of Lakeshore to participate in gymnastics, dance and cheerleading. These students have come from Porter, LaPorte and Lake Counties in Indiana as well as Michigan and Illinois. In 25+ years, Lakeshore's summer day-camps have drawn students from six different states. One of the major reasons for Lakeshore's success is their professional staff. This year alone, Lakeshore has an instructional staff of 34 people. Of those, 11 are school teachers or have educationally related degrees. The remainder of the staff include instructors who are day-care directors, nurses and coaches. Many employees are ex-gymnasts. The main ingredient to the Lakeshore staff is their love of children and their ability to communicate with youngsters and their competence in coaching. Lakeshore is also recognized around the state, region and even nationally for their commitment to excellence, training and professionalism. We are certified and sanctioned members of USA Gymnastics, the governing body of gymnastics in the United States. We are also area leaders in the USA Gymnastics Safety Association. Our employees meet all standards for: National Masters Workshops Skills Evaluators Meet Directors and Preschool Specialists Safety and CPR Certified Lakeshore participates in the: NAWGJ Officials association ICGSA girls' sports association Indiana Gymnastics Board of Directors USAG Region V Coaches' Association Lakeshore is one of only a handful of schools nationally, to have 4 staff members with KAT Preschool Accreditation. |
